Power Outage Updates

East Point Power is committed to enhancing the reliability and resilience of our electrical grid. We are pleased to provide an update on several key initiatives currently underway:

#1 Grid Hardening Project
  • Approved on April 17, 2023, the Grid Hardening Project focuses on upgrading our infrastructure to better withstand severe weather and other disruptions. This initiative includes undergrounding primary lines from the substation and installing advanced S&C IntelliRupter® smart primary switches and smart fuses, which will significantly reduce power restoration time during outages. FXB Engineering is assisting with planning, while Pike Electric has been contracted for execution. The project is divided into several phases: Phase 1, from Ben Hill Substation to Headland Drive, and Phase 2, from Headland Drive to Grove Substation. We are finalizing plans for Phase 1 and preparing for its potential start date.
#2 Danger Tree Removal
  • Our City Arborists are conducting daily assessments to identify and address trees that could pose risks to our primary power lines, especially those on private property. Homeowners are notified when a tree is identified as a threat, and removal is requested through a contracted tree service. As of September 1, 2024, we have invested over $265,000 in this crucial safety measure for FY2024 and FY2025.

#3 Vegetation Management
  • To further prevent outages, we have partnered with Aidah, a leader in satellite data and AI-driven vegetation management. This initiative, approved on July 15, 2024, helps us manage vegetation around our power lines and critical infrastructure more effectively. By optimizing maintenance schedules and ensuring regulatory compliance, we aim to reduce the risk of outages caused by overgrowth or falling trees.

#4 Power System Study
  • A comprehensive Power System Study, approved on April 18, 2022, is being conducted to assess the performance of our electrical distribution system. This study covers load flow, fault current potential, arc flash hazards, and device coordination to enhance the safety, reliability, and efficiency of our power system.

We are dedicated to advancing these initiatives to strengthen our power system’s resilience and minimize outage impacts on our community. Should you have any questions or require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us at poweroutage@eastpointcity.org.
